Get Started

A few minutes of planning makes all the difference. Here's how to choose the right size before your Knotari rug arrives.

Tape it out first

Use masking tape on the floor to outline your prospective rug size. Live with it for a day or two before deciding — it's the easiest way to visualize scale in the room.

Think in scale, not just fit

Larger rugs anchor a room and let furniture float on top of them. Smaller rugs work well to define a single seating area or a cozy nook.

Leave a clean border

Aim for 12–18 inches of exposed floor between the rug's edge and the walls. It keeps the room feeling grounded rather than boxed in.

Center on the room, not the furniture

When possible, center the rug on the room itself rather than a single piece of furniture, especially in open-plan spaces.

In smaller living rooms, a rug placed between the furniture creates an open, balanced feel. Keep it at least as wide as your sofa and close enough to visually connect the seating area. A 5' x 8' or 6' x 9' rug is an ideal fit.

For medium-sized living rooms, placing the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug helps bring the entire seating area together. For a balanced look, choose a rug that extends about 8" beyond each side of the sofa. A 6' x 9' or 8' x 10' rug works beautifully for this arrangement.

For larger living rooms, placing all furniture fully on the rug creates a spacious, cohesive look. Choose a rug large enough to comfortably frame the seating area, leaving at least 6" of rug beyond the sofa and surrounding pieces. Depending on your room, sizes from 8' x 10' to 12' x 15' work beautifully for this layout.

For larger sectional sofas, aligning the sofa with one corner of the rug creates a clean, intentional foundation. Use the remaining rug area to balance accent chairs and tables for a relaxed, well-composed look. A 9' x 12' rug is an ideal choice for this arrangement.

For spacious, open living rooms with two sofas facing each other, a generously sized rug helps define and anchor the entire seating area. Choose a rug that extends at least 8" beyond the furniture to create a comfortable, well-proportioned frame. A 9' x 12' or 12' x 15' rug works beautifully for this layout.

For square or round dining tables seating 4–8 guests, choose a rug that comfortably frames both the table and chairs. An 8' x 8' or 8' x 10' rug creates a balanced foundation while giving the dining space a polished, inviting feel.

For dining tables seating 6–8 guests, a 6' x 9' rug creates a balanced and inviting foundation. With a table around 5' long, the rug provides a generous frame around the dining area, giving the space a more open and elevated feel.

For large rectangular dining tables seating 8–10 guests, a 9' x 12' rug provides a generous foundation for the entire dining arrangement. The added space around the table creates a comfortable, well-balanced setting with a refined and elevated feel.

For smaller bedrooms with a twin-size bed, a 4' x 6' or 5' x 8' rug creates a comfortable and well-proportioned foundation. Position the rug beneath the lower portion of the bed, allowing enough rug to extend on either side for a soft and inviting place to step.

For larger bedrooms with a queen-size bed, a 6' x 9' or 9' x 12' rug offers generous coverage and a soft landing on either side. A larger rug also extends beautifully beyond the foot of the bed, leaving room for a bench or simply allowing the rug’s texture and design to stand out.

For spacious bedrooms with a king-size bed, a 9' x 12' or 12' x 15' rug creates a generous foundation that beautifully frames the entire sleeping area. Positioning the rug toward the back wall provides ample coverage beneath the bed and nightstands while adding warmth, comfort, and a quieter feel underfoot.
